Struggling with Winter Sluggishness? Try This Gentle Morning Reset

Have you noticed the days are starting to get longer?

It is the perfect time to start awakening our body and mind to more energy.

It is still winter so we’re not talking oodles of energy that will get you to spring clean the entire house or start redesigning the entire garden – more a gentle, steady energy that comes and nudges the winter sluggishness out of the way a little bit.

Here are 4 tips on how to beat the sluggishness of winter mornings:

  1. Gentle movement

Even 5 minutes of movements in the morning will help your body and your mid feel more awake and energised. Try some gentle twist movements, a couple of cat stretches or side bends.

I have created a short morning yoga video based on the sun sequence that will boost your circulation, ease stiffness, make you work on your balance and generally start the day feeling positive

This class is accessible to everyone. There are some kneeling elements, but you can replace this by a high lunge instead if you don’t want to put pressure on your knees. You can access the video here.

2. Let there be light

Even if the skies are grey, it is good to open your curtains as soon as you wake up to let in some natural light. Natural light, even under the greyest of skies, signals to your brain that it is time to start the day. Letting in some natural light in the morning will also help you sleep better at night.

You can also light some candles around your house for that extra little bit of brightness.

3. Stay hydrated

Not an obvious one, especially if you are cold and not particularly thirsty but being dehydrated, even slightly, has a direct impact on your energy level. Get into the habit of starting your day by sipping a glass of water, even before your morning cup or tea or coffee.

4. Create a morning ritual

Take ownership of your morning. How would you like to wake up? (Obviously, if you tell me 2 hours later and under a sunny sky, I can’t help you there!) But take a moment to think of what would be a good way to wake up for you. It is starting with that glass of water I mentioned earlier, or taking the time for a luxurious fingertips to toes stretch in bed before getting up… What would make waking up a little bit easier?

On the 1st February, we are at midwinter: the mid-point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. To celebrate the approach of spring, you are invited to my midwinter workshop coming up on the 2nd February that is all about re-igniting your energy in a very gentle and sustainable way.

Spaces are limited for this one, so book your place to avoid disappointment! You can book for the workshop here or if you have any question, please drop me a line. 🙂
