Last weekend, I took part in a training called Yoga for a holistic menopause.
Menopause is often regarded as an uncomfortable phase of a woman’s life that brings with it hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, increased anxiety, new aches and pain, loss of flexibility and a sense of dread.
Basically, it isn’t something most women look forward to!
If you are going through menopause now, or you have in the past, you may have suffered from some (or many) of the symptoms I listed above. You may have gone to your GP for some help and he may have suggested antidepressants, anti-inflammatories and/or HRT which, I hope, are (or were) helpful to you.
Yoga proposes a complementary approach to the menopause.
You might have been given a treatment by your GP or you might be going through your menopause naturally. Either way, yoga can help you:
- Relieve some of the menopause symptoms like hot flushes, anxiety, loss of balance and flexibility
- Build and maintain strong bones and a good level of balance
- Improve your flexibility and alleviate joint pains
- Improve the elasticity of your core muscles and of your pelvic floor
- Relieve pain from the lumbar area
- Release stress
- Develop new positive habits that will support you daily
- Improve your vitality
- Optimise your digestion
- Improve your sleep
- Develop a different approach to your menopause
I will be starting a new yoga class for a holistic menopause class in September. Keep an eye on my Facebook page for more details as and when they get finalised.
Menopause can be a shock. Even though society is changing and starting to look at menopause in a more positive light, there is still the idea of an older woman who, by her transition through menopause, somehow becomes less important.
It doesn’t have to be this way at all. Menopause can be a time when you decide that you will give yourself more of your time, energy and attention. After years of giving, nurturing and caring, menopause is often a wake-up call for women and a realisation that “it is time to do something for me”.
May it be this time for you.
